We purchased a 2010 Nissan Cube in mint condition in 2012 from a reputable third party car dealer for $12,000 with 52,000 km. on it .... I guess that could now be called 'Strike One'. We were so impressed with the car. Easy to get in and out of, comfortable to drive, good gas mileage, and she thought it was "cute".

My wife has a pretty fair daily commute, and we knew the car would be a high-miler from the get-go. That said, and for that reason, we maintained the car impeccably.

One cold winter morning when the car was started, we noticed a loud whining sound coming from the engine compartment, so took the car to the dealership for a diagnosis within a couple of days. The technician drove the car and came back and informed us that the transmission was cooked. We asked how much to repair it, and were told that because the CVT is a sealed unit, it cannot be disassembled and repaired, but that we would need to install a brand new transmission.

When told the price, we almost choked .... $4500! The dealer tried to talk us into purchasing a used Altima instead for $17,000. My wife didn't like it, so I opted for the new tranny seeing how she loved the Cube so much. We now realize that was Strike Number Two.

Last week, I get a phone call from her that the car has slowed down to 40 km/hr. and the RPMs were soaring on the tach. I called CAA who flatbedded her vehicle to the closest Nissan dealer to her, where they said that there was only a little fluid on the dipstick. We had a complete tranny fluid flush done for $330. A week later, she stopped at a stop sign on the way home from work, and when she accelerated to go ..... nothing. She pulled over, shut the vehicle down, restarted it, and it seemed fine after doing so, and she eased it home.

We took the car to the Nissan dealer closest to our home, and it was diagnosed as a cooked transmission again. Out of warranty. Sorry about your luck. Strike Three! ..... a swing and a miss.

So here we are .... 4 years later, $12,000 for the car, $5000 (with taxes) for the first transmission, and now a further $5000 for *another* new transmission. Yes, the vehicle now has 390,000 km. on it, but 90% of those were highway miles. Unacceptable, in my opinion. A consumer has the right to expect a car's transmission to last a lot longer than that. Actually, I have NEVER put a new transmission into ANY car I've driven in the past, and I recently got rid of my Honda Ridgeline with half a million kilometres on it, and still with the original exhaust on it!

So, two Nissan dealers now have shrugged their shoulders at our predicament, and the CSR at Nissan Canada calmly explained that any replacement parts from Nissan come with a standard one year/20,000 km. warranty. When I asked if that included new transmissions, she said "a new transmission is a replacement part, isn't it?"

Wow, customer service with a smile!!

Again, anyone looking for a big white boat anchor that slightly resembles a toaster, there's one sitting out in my driveway that you can have very inexpensively. Please, BYOTT. (Bring Your Own Tow Truck) STAY AWAY FROM NISSANS EQUIPPED WITH CVT TRANSMISSIONS!

You've been warned.

Two years ago my daughter had a choice between a Nissan Ultima and a Toyota Corolla for the same price. I called our mechanic for his opinion. Without hesitation he said, "The Toyota, hands down!" I'm so glad we took his expert advice.
